French label Le Chat Qui Fume has released director Alex Proyas’ dreamy post-apocalyptic sci-fi, Spirits of the Air, Gremlins of the Clouds (1987) on Blu-ray.
Felix Crabtree and his sister Betty live in autarky in the Australian desert. Their solitude is broken one day by the arrival of a stranger with a troubled past, Smith. The latter tries to rally the north of the country, while three men seem to be after him. Because impassable cliffs await Smith on his future journey, Felix promises to help him if he manages to complete an old dream: the construction of a flying machine.
Dreamlike delirium charged with mysticism, Spirits of the Air, Gremlins of the Clouds is the first feature film directed by Alex Proyas (The Crow, Dark City). Set in a post-apocalyptic setting, this contemplative work benefits from a haunting musical score by Peter Miller. Performed by Melissa Davis (Le Drive-in de l’Enfer) and Michael Lake (Einstein Junior), Spirits of the Air, Gremlins of the Clouds, until now invisible in France, is finally available on Blu-ray and DVD.
It could easily bore anyone who isn’t willing to just sit back and enjoy (illicit substances may help) but it looks beautiful.Paul Freitag-Fey — Daily Grindhouse
