A Different Story (1978) Blu-ray: Is it different enough?

American cult film label Scorpion Releasing presents director Paul Aaron’s look at the gay lifestyle, A Different Story (1978) on Blu-ray. Stars Perry King, Meg Foster.

A lesbian real estate agent takes in a gay illegal immigrant as a roommate when he loses his job. They ultimately marry to keep him from being deported, but after a night of drunken impulsive sex, she gets pregnant. Can two sexually mismatched friends remain together to create a family, or will hormones tear them apart? Cinematography by Philip H. Lathrop (The Pink PantherThey Shoot Horses, Don’t They?).

Luckily, the overall quality, sincerity, fresh humor, and truth smooth the rough spots, making A Different Story worth seeing because it tries hard and (almost) makes it.

The movie’s use of their homosexuality is indeed exploitative, insensitive, and offensive in a variety of ways. Even worse, it is unconvincing.
